Coudersport Public Library is proud to rank as a PA Forward ‘Gold Star’ Library!
In 2016, as participants in the Pennsylvania Library Association’s 21st Century Libraries Intiative, PA Forward, we completed all of the criteria to earn the status of Gold Star in the PA Forward pilot program initiative — becoming one of the very first libraries in the state to mark that achievement!
In the process of completing requirements for the prestigious title, we earned our Bronze Star and all five PA Forward Silver Stars — in five types of literacies: Basic, Information, Civic and Social, Health and Financial. This initiative places the spotlight on Pennsylvania libraries and the important role libraries play in the lives of citizens. Coudersport Public Library, along with other libraries in the North Central Library District, is working to raise awareness of its programs and offerings that help citizens improve their command of these five types of literacy — literacies which are essential to greater success in all vital roles of life: s students, as parents, as parents, as employees, as consumers, as citizens. North Central Library District served as the pilot project for the PA Forward initiative, now being launched statewide.
Coudersport Public Library has participated in the PA Forward pilot initiative in several ways: through hosting historical discussions for adults and children, assisting patrons with improving basic computer skills, presenting story times to preschool children, partnering with health-related organizations as a host site for health-related discussions, and working with elementary students to develop an appreciation of the dollars-and-cents value of libraries in their lives.
“We consider PA Forward to be a great way for libraries to chart the fulfillment of their role as promoters of these vital literacies,” commented Teri McDowell, director. “It has been important to us to reach out to both adults and children during the course of the PA Forward pilot project, because these literacies are applicable to all ages. We are thrilled to have completed the requirements to be designated a Gold Star Library, and we certainly plan to continue to work to promote the five literacies long into the future.
